As Robin Roberts and Amber Laign prepare for their nuptials in September 2023, they’re taking viewers along for the ride. The Good Morning America news anchor and her partner of 18 years have been sharing snippets of information about their big day for the past few months, and they even recently threw an on-air bachelorette party for fans to partake in on August 16, 2023. Now, the couple is sharing a behind-the-scenes look at their wedding dress fitting and wedding cake tasting. During the television network’s newscast on August 28, 2023, GMA broadcaster Gio Benitez introduced the special segment, while Roberts was sitting beside him in the newsroom. “I think this is going to be our favorite little segment here, right?” he asks the audience, while Roberts laughs. “Robin and Amber’s road to the ring. It’s almost time for them to tie the knot—We’re all so excited about that. They were kind enough—you know them, they’re always kind—to let us come along to these dress fittings and the cake tasting."

The video then cuts to a clip of the brides-to-be dressed in white robes. “T-minus a couple of months,” Roberts says while introducing the portion of the segment that focuses on the wedding dress fitting. “You ready?” Laign responds enthusiastically, “Yeah!” “We’re going to the fitting…I never thought I’d say that,” Roberts admits. The camera cuts to two different sketches of wedding dresses that their wedding dress designers, Mark Badgley and James Mischka of fashion label Badgley Mischka, created. The first is an A-line dress with a pleated skirt and a high back with buttons, and the other is a high-neck, figure-hugging ensemble. “They’re simple, but they’re powerful, and I know you like simple,” one of the designers says to Roberts.

The clip also shows a portion of the alteration process, with one of the designers cutting the hem of a gown. Roberts and Laign then step out in their wedding regalia, but the editor of the video covers both of them in animated flowers to conceal the details. Even though we don’t get a first look at the gowns, we do hear the upcoming brides utter words of praise. “Wow, so stunning,” Laign gushes. “Look how it’s cut with the shoulder,” Roberts points out. “That it.” Even though Roberts and Laign joined one another during this wedding dress fitting, Roberts reveals that the final fitting will be a solo adventure. “I want us to see each other in the final dress for the first time on the wedding,” Roberts explains.

At the end of the wedding dress fitting, during a confessional, Roberts tells viewers her favorite part of the process. “It’s been fun watching sweet Amber, just watching her just get emotional and having fun and giggling,” Roberts says. Laign also shares her answer. “I never really thought I’d be doing this,” Laign admits. “Just having it all unfold and discovering parts of myself I didn’t really know were there—it’s been fun.” Then, Roberts reveals one of her best-kept wedding planning tips. “You cannot underestimate having a good wedding planner, alright?” Roberts stresses to the audience. “JoAnn, she is phenomenal.” Roberts is referring to event producer and planner JoAnn Gregoli of Elegant Occasions by JoAnn Gregoli, who is helping them orchestrate their special day.

Next up is the wedding cake tasting. The clip shows the brides-to-be drinking Champagne together before meeting with their cake designer, Vincenzo Salvatore of Vincenzo Salvatore Cakes. During the segment, Roberts and Laign both take bites of various pieces of cake and appear to be in good spirits, laughing and dancing throughout the process. In between bites, Laign announces the vision for her upcoming nuptials, including the theme and color palette. “Our wedding is a feeling of enchantment garden,” she says. “Our colors are white, blush, pinks, a little bit of green.” Then, Salvatore pulls up an image of what appears to be their cake design: an all-white ruffled confection. “It’s traditional without being traditional,” the cake designer concludes. Roberts agrees: “It’s simple, yet it makes a statement.”

At the end of the video, the camera cuts back to the newsroom, where Roberts concludes the segment by reiterating her favorite part of the process: Amber. “I mean, we are deliriously happy, and going through all that we’ve gone through,” Roberts says tearfully. She also mentions that her viewers are a big source of her excitement. “But you know what? Thank you, thank you, thank you to our viewers, thank you to people who have just [given us] well-wishes, and they know what we’ve been through,” she expresses. “They’re having fun with us, and that’s why we’re sharing us much as we are.”
